THOMAS BURTON,GENERAL COUNSEL AND SECRETARY
Thomas Burton, Service King’s General Counsel and Secretary, serves as an integral member of the organization’s Executive Team, guiding and supervising all legal affairs of Service King. Burton is an experienced attorney with more than 20 years in the legal profession and handles an expansive roster of responsibilities at Service King.
Burton was named Service King’s first General Counsel in 2014, amidst a time of explosive growth for the organization. Today, with more than 340 locations in 24 states, Burton continues to direct and advise all aspects of the documentation, negotiation, and closing of all Service King acquisitions and developed locations and has personally handled transactions accounting for more than 200 of Service King’s locations nationwide.
Burton is responsible for preparing, negotiating, and finalizing all contractual agreements for the organization. These include real estate construction and lease agreements, vendor contracts and insurance partner arrangements. He is also responsible for managing the company’s licensing team which is responsible for maintaining well over 1,000 licenses. Burton also serves as Secretary for all affiliated entities and helps manage the organization’s equity ownership and option programs across Service King’s network.
In addition, Burton oversees company litigation and settlement strategies, as well as internal investigations, maintaining company policies and procedures, and monitoring environmental due diligence and compliance for Service King locations nationwide. Burton currently serves on the Board of Directors for Service King’s very own 501(c)(3), The Service King President’s Fund, which is a program designed to provide aid and financial assistance for teammates who find themselves in crisis or in an unanticipated time of need.
Prior to joining the Service King family, Burton practiced law for 17 years at Strasburger & Price in Dallas as an Associate and Partner of the firm in the firm’s Corporate & Securities Practice Unit. At Strasburger, Burton gained experience handling mergers and acquisitions, contract preparation and review, entity formation and restructuring, corporate governance, loan and real estate documentation, litigation management and more. While at Strasburger, Burton served as Service King’s outside General Counsel for five years before officially joining Service King in 2014.
Burton has been nominated and recognized as a finalist for numerous awards and honors, including D CEO Magazine’s Corporate Counsel Award for Outstanding Solo General Counsel and the Texas General Counsel Forum’s Magna Stella Award for Solo General Counsel. He graduated with honors from the University of Texas School of Law and completed his undergraduate degrees in Accounting and Finance at SMU. Burton is also a licensed CPA.
