As President, Chief Executive Officer and Board Director of Virgin America (NASDAQ: VA) for nine years, David led the company through restructuring and turnaround, growth, IPO, and M&A, creating the 5th largest airline in the US with Virgin America’s sale to Alaska Airlines. Virgin America became known for its award-winning products and services and built a top industry brand with cutting edge marketing and superior customer service. David led Virgin America through its IPO in 2014 and sold this profitable and strongly positioned company in 2016, generating a 2.5x exit multiple for shareholders.
Prior to Virgin, David built his career progressing through the ranks of American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL), becoming a top 12 leader at the world’s largest airline by fleet and revenue, and second largest by destinations served. As Senior Vice President Global Sales and Distribution, and as a member of the Executive Committee with American Airlines, David led all sales activities and distribution strategy for American’s global network, leading sales teams in 55 countries.
David’s prior leadership roles with American Airlines included: Vice President, St. Louis Hub, Vice President International Planning and Regulatory Affairs, and Managing Director Sales and Operations - Caribbean, Central America. A key financial leader, David also served as Managing Director Finance and Administration for Caribbean/Latin America, as well as for Europe, Middle East, and Africa, directing all areas of finance, accounting and tax across 12 countries in EMEA and 30 countries in the Caribbean and Latin America.
David holds an MBA from Southern Methodist University, where he also earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Broadcast/Film.
